3D printing service, Digits2Widgets has produced a series of 3D-printed architectural models to be showcased in the permanent collection at the Design Museum London’s new home on Kensington High Street.
The museum commissioned Digits2Widgets to print the models which were originally designed by Pritzker Prize-winning, Zaha Hadid Architects. This is the first ‘Design Maker User’ featured exhibition which combines architecture, product design, technology, transport, and fashion in a display that investigates ‘the form, function and meaning of the world around us’.
Zaha Hadid’s City of Towers is an installation focusing on the parametric research led by her practice, exploring new concepts for designing and constructing high-rise buildings. Derived from a singular concept, the installation shows the many options and iterations for a tower, mapping its variations and development process.
Digits2Widgets said it was delighted to be part of this landmark exhibition telling the story of contemporary design which sits at the heart of the £83m new home of the Design Museum in the old Commonwealth Institute building.
The scale of some of the models range from 10cm to 60cm in height. Since Digits2Widgets have the largest capacity Nylon SLS 3D printer in London, it was able to produce this large and extensive range of models. Digits2Widgets used 3D printers manufactured by Electro Optical Systems GmBH, who sponsored the materials used in the production.
As well as players in the architecture industry, Digits2Widgets has made a particular effort to ensure customers are getting the proper knowledge about how 3D printing can help them, by building a team of in-house experts from areas such as gaming, industrial design, and jewellery.
Founded in 2010, Digits2Widgets is a creative off-shot of the Wimpole Street dental practice, Dawood & Tanner, who were pioneering the use of 3D printing in their advanced dental treatments as early as 2005. Its imaging and rapid prototyping facilities, along with their technical expertise has allowed the creation of 3D images and models for precise surgical planning by specialist dentists, maxillofacial surgeons, orthopaedic specialists, ENT specialists and plastic and aesthetic surgeons.
