Founded by Los Alamos National Lab Scientists, Sigma Labs was part of the winning team of companies and universities to have won the contract from The National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute (NAMII) for Sigma Labs' proprietary In-Process Quality Assurance (IPQA) System. IPQA was developed to monitor additive manufacturing and 3D printing - which appealed to America Makes during the selection process.
America Makes stated that the project looks at the need to establish a commercially available, platform independent Quality Assurance system for the high-volume additive manufacturing production for aerospace components "which technology is currently lacking within the industry".
Sigma Labs' heritage is based in defence, aerospace and the advanced materials industries and Mark Cola, President and CEO, welcomed the news the company had been chosen for the project.
"We are quite pleased to have been chosen along with our partners by the premier additive manufacturing and 3D printing association to participate in accelerating the commercialisation of our quality assurance technology," Mr Cola stated. "This award further establishes Sigma Labs as an organisation that is growing in stature along with the major players in the field of additive manufacturing and 3D printing."
Director of America Makes and NCDMM Vice-President Ed Morris added: "We were very pleased by the quality of the projects proposed by our members for this second round of additive manufacturing R&D projects being launched, which of course made the final selection process even more challenging. Combined with the projects underway from our first project call, we will soon have nearly $30 million of public and private funds invested in advancing the state-of-the-art in additive manufacturing in the US."
Sigma Labs expects to generate up to $750,000 (£451,000, €548,000) in revenues over the next 18 months from this project. Additional information on the project can be found athttps://americamakes.us/news/item/475-second-projectcall-awardees.
