3D Printed Woven Tank Top
We recently took a closer look into the developments of 3D printing in the fashion world as more designers and students harness the technology to change the way we think about what we wear. This week 3D printing made its way onto the runway at New York Fashion Week.
Designer Katie Gallagher incorporated 3D printed designs into her Spring/Summer 2015 ‘Fantasm’ collection with pieces from 3D fashion and textiles designer, Bradley Rothenberg.
A white tank top and trims were made in polyamide using a laser sintering process from global suppliers of additive manufacturing solutions, Materialise.
The back of the tank top features links that weave flawlessly into one another, a look which could only be achieved using 3D printing. The result is the piece offers different visual effects depending on the position of the viewer. The idea is that the piece plays with the viewer’s senses to show how perception can change from person to person.
The detailing on one of Katie’s skirts also benefited from 3D printing by providing an effective solution for a delicate yet bold floral detail to the hem.
Yet, this is not the first time Rothenberg has designed 3D printed garments for the catwalk. Last year the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show featured a ‘snowflake costume’ with a corset and wings combination created by the designer and printed by Shapeways.
