FATHOM, the advanced technology company based in Oakland, has become the latest company to sign a partner agreement with Desktop Metal.
Through this agreement, FATHOM will adopt Desktop Metal’s metal 3D printing technology for use in its in-house advanced manufacturing solutions and managed services, as well as resell it. The company is aiming to further develop its focus on changing the way products are designed and manufactured, according to a press release.
Desktop Metal made its official launch in April 2017, off the back of serious investment from a range of venture companies and 3D printing leaders. Its flagship technologies, the DM Studio and DM Production systems, announced Desktop Metal to the industry and were showcased at RAPID+TCT earlier this month. At RAPID, the Boston-based company also announced an extension of its association with Stratasys.
This partnership with FATHOM will see designers benefit from Desktop Metal’s cost-effective Studio System.
“FATHOM is very excited to partner with Desktop Metal to help bring a lower barrier-of-entry solution for metal additive technologies to a broader engineering and manufacturing market,” said Rich Stump, Co-Founder and Principal at FATHOM. “With current metal 3D printing equipment, it is cost prohibitive to 3D print metal prototype parts. Desktop Metal has introduced a solution, the Studio System, which will allow designers to cost effectively produce metal prototypes.”
The DM Studio System uses Metal Injection Moulding (MIM) technology and will begin shipping in September. Sold for $120,000, the Studio System comes as part of a package that includes the metal 3D printer, debinder, and microwave-enhanced sintering furnace.
Desktop Metal CEO and Co-Founder Ric Fulop is one of the driving forces behind Desktop Metal’s rise to prominence. He welcomed TCT Group Editor, Dan O’Connor to the company’s Boston HQ ahead of Desktop Metal’s launch, and also spoke exclusively to TCT at the RAPID+TCT event in Pittsburgh. Of the partnership with FATHOM, he has expressed his excitement and praised the work of Desktop Metal’s newest partner.
“We are excited to be partnering with FATHOM both as a manufacturing service centre and a sales partner as we look to broaden the adoption of our metal 3D printing systems,” Fulop said. “Rich Stump and Michelle Mihevc have built an incredible team who will be integral in expanding market opportunities and driving the growth of our customer base across diverse industries.”
Mihevc, Co-Founder and Principal at FATHOM adds: “FATHOM and Desktop Metal share a passion for additive technologies, as well as a similar vision for finding unique processes that change the way products are designed and manufactured today. We feel very strongly that by providing this solution, one that is both office friendly and accessible at a lower cost, there will be immediate growth in the adoption of metal 3D printing.
“Our team already has plans for R&D exploration into furthering application innovations for this technology. For example, we aim to leverage our expertise in 3D printer tooling to develop a process that achieves more robust tools even faster and more economically.”
