With additive manufacturing’s reputation as a sustainable production method, thanks to the lack of material waste occurring during a print, energy wastage is not accepted by Leapfrog.
Dutch 3D printer and accessory manufacturer, Leapfrog 3D Printers has introduced a new feature to its latest range of products which automatically shuts down the machine when the print is finished.
Auto Shutdown is automatically updated to current Leapfrog 3D printers running the latest Leapfrog User Interface.
The feature has been incorporated by the Dutch company to reduce the over-usage of electricity when its machines are not operating. Typically, 3D printers left on standby, waste a significant amount of electrical energy. Worldwide, there is believed to be over a million 3D printers installed. Most 3D printers need several hours to complete a single print, and thus are usually left on standby overnight with no operator nearby.
With additive manufacturing’s reputation as a sustainable production method, thanks to the lack of material waste occurring during a print, energy wastage is not accepted by Leapfrog. With the launch of this new feature, Leapfrog hopes its small step towards a better, safer and sustainable world, will inspire other companies in the industry to consider similar features.

“As the installed base of 3D printers continues to grow, adding an automatic shutdown feature to new and existing machines has the potential to save a tremendous amount of energy,” said Sander Adam, CEO of Leapfrog 3D Printers. “We hope that this practice will be adopted by all our competitors in order to make our industry more sustainable.”
Leapfrog 3D Printers was founded in 2012 when AV Flexologic, a Dutch manufacturer of machines for the flexographic industry, was in need of producing prototypes and unavailable spare parts for their machines. After evaluating the 3D printing options available to it at the time, the decision was made to develop an easy-to-use, sturdy and versatile 3D printer. Here, Leapfrog’s Creatr was born.
Now into its fifth year as a manufacturer of 3D technology, Leapfrog is hoping to accelerate more sustainable 3D printers, as well as continuing to provide easy-to-use, affordable 3D printing solutions.
