Maybe it's me, but the stream of new personal 3D printers being launched seems to be slowing down a bit. We'll be down to one a week before you know it.
One of the latest to hit funding-platform-of-choice, Kickstarter, is the L5 3D open source printer. The system runs the familiar extrusion set up housed in an open frame which has been constructed of injection moulded parts with inserts moulded in — reducing the number of nuts and bolts that need tightening.
The extrusion head is apparently a best-of-the-rest affair, with concepts taken from other systems and combined into a simple solution. The build bed is heated to help reduce warping, and is levelled by a screw on each corner. Snap-in roller bearing along with the injection moulded parts should make this printer easy to set up for the dedicated home builder.
The Kickstarter project allows you to get your hands on the basic kit for $470 (£300, €370) or for $1050 (£660, €820) you could get your hands onthe fully assembled, calibrated version — if they reach their $50k target in the next 15 days that is, at the time of writing they are just over half-way there.
