As many LEGO enthusiasts get ready to unwrap their first 3D printed pieces this Christmas as part of the LEGO Icons Holiday Express Train set, we enlisted former TCT Editor (now Editor at TCT sister site Med-Tech Insights) - and major LEGO fan - Oliver Johnson to share his thoughts on the Danish toy maker's first mass-produced 3D printed product.

In September 2025, the LEGO Icons Holiday Express Train set was officially announced, including the first mass-produced 3D printed LEGO element, a miniature train.

As soon as it was revealed, I knew I had to get my hands on it. As a former Junior Editor on TCT, I became very invested in the 3D printing industry, and as an avid collector of LEGO in my spare time, this was a perfect combination of two of my favourite interests.

The full set, once built, has some interesting mechanisms. LEGO Technic pieces allow the chimney to move up and down as it moves along the tracks, and there's also a buildable polar bear with moving, bell-ringing arms.
