The digital skills gap is one of the most heavily debated topics in the advanced manufacturing sector. As firms make the move towards Industry 4.0 and digitalisation, the need to upskill and reskill the workforce is crucial to plugging that skills shortage and remaining competitive.

A new platform from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is aiming to address that by providing organisations with a resource that will keep their workforces up to date with the latest developments in technology and science.

This digital content library, known as MIT Horizon, has been put together by experts from academia and industry to deliver easy to digest articles, videos and podcasts on emerging technologies such as additive manufacturing, artificial intelligence, robotics and blockchain.

"Technologies are advancing very rapidly, and we feel a responsibility at MIT to provide learning opportunities that can help today's workforce keep up with this pace of innovation," said Sanjay Sarma, MIT vice president for open learning. "With MIT Horizon, we aim to introduce more granular learning in a variety of formats that teams can easily consume."

MIT Horizon will operate as a subscription-based service and will be kept to date with content from MIT writers, faculty, and industry experts aimed at both technical and non-technical learners. MIT says it has already secured subscriptions from five customers including HP and Amsted Industries.

"This is a groundbreaking platform specially-designed for learning on emerging technologies," Sarma added. "We are thrilled to bring this offering to organizations in need of new learning opportunities, as it reflects our mission of expanding MIT's educational reach to millions of working professionals."
