You may recall a 3D printed wedding dress which took over the news feed at last month’s inaugural TCT Asia in Shanghai. All eyes and cameras were on the bespoke dress from China’s up and coming design firm Xuberance, a 3D printing design company based in Shanghai who specialise in creating custom pieces using 3D printing technology. From what the bride wore, to the bouquet, down to floral venue dressing, the latest project covered everything a bride could dream of for an entirely 3D printed wedding.
By now we’re used to seeing 3D printed dresses from leading 3D printing and design companies on global runways all the way down to student fashion projects but up until now they’ve usually taken the form of conceptual pieces, created for a trip down the runway rather than a casual evening out to dinner.
Xuberance’s stunning 3D printed couture is different. This dress was actually worn by Leirah Wang on her wedding day to husband and fellow Xuberance co-founder, Steven Ma.
Taking around two weeks to design and three weeks to create the entire piece, Steven created the dress from a full body scan of the bride which was then 3D printed in nylon.
As Leirah so aptly puts, that’s the beauty of having a designer as your husband: “For a girl that’s one of the reasons you marry a designer – you always have good stuff!”
We caught up with both the bride and the groom at TCT Asia to get acquainted with the Chinese design firm, talk the impact of 3D printing and of course get the story behind, that dress.
