Two hours into this year’s Formnext and we’ve had our first significant product unveiling.

EOS has launched the EOS M4 ONYX and EOS M4 ONYX FLX metal 3D printing systems, confirming to TCT that the new systems will replace the M 400 and M 400-4 machines in its product portfolio.

The company will continue to sell the M 400 and M400-4 models until at least the end of 2026, with servicing of existing installations continuing in the long term. But new customers will increasingly be pushed towards the M4 ONYX series. No customers have yet had access to the new M4 ONYX machines, though benchmarking is well underway, and EOS suggests there have been more than 30 pre-orders prior to the launch at Formnext.

“Each and every customer using the M4 today will go for the M4 ONYX,” Sebastian Becker, Head of Product Management Metal Solutions at EOS, told TCT. “On the one hand, they will save money, and on the other, they will open up new business cases. There are a lot of applications where we are on the edge of return on investment, and with this machine, we are [enabling these kinds of applications.”

EOS’ latest product launch, then, comes with a lot of intrigue and excitement. So, what’s different about these new products? Here’s what we know so far.

Build envelope

Working off customer feedback, EOS has been committed to expanding the build envelope of its metal additive manufacturing systems. For several years now, customers have been able to access customised build volumes via sister company AMCM, and as it looked to enhance its M400 offering, EOS has incorporated a 'significant' expansion to the print volume.
