How to ... choose the right parts for additive manufacturing

If you’re new to additive manufacturing (AM), or maybe you’ve just been away from it for a while, it can be pretty daunting trying to decide whether, how and where it might be helpful for your business. It can be easy to get drawn in by the ‘AM for everything’ hype, and just as easy to disregard these processes because of one bad experience. Luckily, there are a few key considerations you can apply in order to make sure you’re making the right choices.

Step 1: Understanding what AM can and can’t do

It sounds obvious, but it’s really tricky to make an informed decision without being… informed. Keeping an eye on how AM is being used, both in your own industry and more broadly, will help you to get an idea of the types of application it’s suited to. If you can get to relevant trade shows and exhibitions, and perhaps subscribe to some appropriate high-quality publications (hint, hint), you’ll be surprised how quickly you’ll pick things up.
