Imagine if you can a Möbius strip, the endless single surface model beloved of mathematicians and 3D printing enthusiasts. Now imagine living in one, because that's exactly what technologist Enrico Dini and architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars from Universe Architecture have planned.
Dini is well known for his company D-Shape, which specialises in large experimental 3D printers that are used to create massive sculptures and even 'buildings' from sand and concrete. They are mostly studies of organic form, scalability of technology and future construction methods.
The bizarre endless Landscape house is certainly eye catching, but closer inspection reveals some quirks that would take some getting used to. Floors becoming ceilings? Outside becoming inside? Life would feel like being trapped in a M C Escher painting (or perhaps worse like being one the protagonists from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas). Maybe not a bad thing per se, but certainly disconcerting at first.
The structure will be printed in sections rather that all in one go (which I was a bit disappointed about to be honest!) and is part of the Europan competition, a pan-european project for spatial designers.
