NAFEMS, the international association for the engineering analysis, modeling and simulation community, has introduced a new standard for simulation engineers at its World Congress this week in Salzburg, Austria.

Professional Simulation Engineer (PSE) Competencies define the competencies and skills that an analysis and simulation engineer should possess. They have been peer-reviewed over several years by NAFEMS technical working groups and external experts to create a new standard of competency in analysis and simulation.

Chief Executive of the Glasgow-based organization Tim Morris stated: "We are committed to improving standards in analysis and simulation; the launch of PSE Competencies is a key step in achieving this."

"Encompassing several levels and technical areas, PSE Competencies establish the skills and competencies that simulation engineers should possess at every stage of their career. Individuals and companies can use these to evaluate competency, maintain standards and improve professional development," he added.

The launch of the new standard is complemented by the introduction of the PSE Competency Tracker - an online system to browse, track and manage PSE Competencies. In addition, the association has launched a new, independently assessed certification scheme, which recognises achievement of PSE Competencies.

PSE Competency Tracker:  Plan, track and manage competency

The PSE Competency Tracker is an online competency management system that allows individuals and companies to browse, track and manage their PSE Competencies. The key features of the Tracker include:

Browse PSE Competencies

Encompassing twenty-six technical areas, there are more than 1,400 individual PSE Competency Statements that can be browsed easily online using the PSE Competency Tracker.

Access Educational Resources

Links to more than 400 educational resources are provided within the PSE Competency Tracker to assist the development of the competencies.

Measure & Track Competency

Using the online PSE Competency Tracker individuals can plan and monitor their development as a simulation engineer, tracking PSE Competencies as they are achieved. Companies can do the same for their staff, creating a database of the combined simulation skills of their workforce.

PSE Certification: Recognition of PSE competencies

PSE Certification recognises the accumulation of PSE Competencies. Based on the simple concept that the 'Professional Simulation Engineer' certificate is achieved by independent assessment, the certification scheme allows individuals to gain recognition for their competency level, in addition to helping industry identify suitable qualified personnel.

A multi-level certification scheme, PSE Certification is suitable for the experienced analyst as well as newcomers to simulation. The experienced simulation engineer is required to present documented and attested evidence of academic and workplace competency to become certified. An appropriately qualified newcomer to simulation is expected to follow a structured training programme under the guidance of a suitably qualified Industrial Mentor.
