Nikon SLM Solutions launches SLM.Prep data prep software for metal AM machine portfolio

Nikon SLM Solutions has officially released the SLM.Prep next-generation data preparation software for its portfolio of metal additive manufacturing systems.

Developed through a multi-year program that leaned on input from several users, Nikon SLM says the software has been designed to 'unify and simplify' build setup. The company also believes it 'introduces a new standard of transparency, accuracy and control' for metal additive manufacturing.

By consolidating advanced data preparation into one tool, Nikon SLM has endeavoured to speed up user workflows while delivering accurate build-time simulations and full slice-level visibility into how every layer will be printed. Detailed laser-spot modelling helps to provide accurate build-time estimations based on Nikon SLM's proprietary scanner behaviour, while every scan vector on every layer can be previewed to provide more insight into the print process before the build starts.

Nikon SLM suggests speed, quality and qualification can be optimised thanks to multiple optic-allocation logics, and notes the instant recalculation of build time when parameters or allocation strategies change as a particular advantage for those using systems like its NXG platform.

SLM.Prep has already been used 'extensively' by multiple early-access customers, including AMEXCI and GKN Aerospace.

“SLM.Prep clearly enhanced our data prep workflow. It is encouraging to see the software’s trajectory and we look forward to further leveraging its full potential,” said Srikanth Purli, Head of Engineering at AMEXCI.

Martin Thordén, VP GKN Aerospace Engines, added: “SLM.Prep is a very user-friendly and interactive software, especially when it comes to working with laser sequencing for NXG machines.”

“SLM.Prep brings a new level of transparency and confidence to additive manufacturing,” offered Simon Merkt-Schippers, Executive Vice President Product Management, Nikon SLM Solutions. “By giving customers a clear, visual understanding of how each laser interacts during production, we’re helping them move faster from design to qualification — unlocking real productivity gains and reducing time to part.”

Nikon SLM says SLM.Prep is immediately available to all Nikon SLM Solutions machine owners and will be continuously expanded with new functionalities driven by ongoing customer feedback.
