Phillips Corporation's Federal Division to deliver containerised hybrid manufacturing systems to US Army

Phillips Corporation, Federal Division, has entered into a contract with the U.S. Army to deliver advanced hybrid manufacturing systems through its Hybrid division.

Through the delivery of these systems, Phillips will support the Army’s Metal Working Machine Shop Set (MWMSS) Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) Modification program and seek to strengthen expeditionary and sustainment manufacturing capabilities across the force.

The award is a delivery order issued under a five-year Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract managed by the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division’s (NSWCCD) Additive Manufacturing Project Office. It enables the procurement of additional WAAM hardware, software, and system integration on Haas CNC vertical machining centres to meet evolving Army manufacturing requirements.

The systems are containerised Wire Arc Hybrid Manufacturing (WAHM) units, integrating additive manufacturing and CNC machining into a single deployable machine. Each system is powered by a Fronius iWave 400i welder, which helps to deliver high-deposition WAAM capability optimised for field and depot-level operations.

“I’ve been personally involved with the MWMSS program since its inception, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to see how these systems have evolved from concept to fielded capability,” said Tim McClanahan, President, Phillips Corporation Federal Division. “What began as a focused effort to extend expeditionary metalworking has naturally matured into a far more capable hybrid manufacturing solution. The integration of Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing with CNC machining in a containerised format delivers more capability to the warfighter than ever before by enabling faster repair, increased self-sufficiency, and true manufacturing at the point of need. This award reflects years of collaboration with the Army and our partners to turn operational requirements into real, deployable capability.”
