Could 3D printing be the next generation of polyurethane foam?

Sitting comfortably

It’s about halfway into a 30-minute phone conversation with Yash Shah, in which the EcoLattice founder and CEO is giving me a quick video tour of the company’s new Beyond Foam exhibition, when I decide, a call just isn’t going to cut it.

A week later I’m on a train bound for London and headed to Aram Gallery where EcoLattice is demonstrating its 3D printed solution to the challenges posed by conventional polyurethane foam through a series of furniture collaborations with eight UK designers.

The company, based here in London and in Ahmedabad, India, was founded by materials engineer Yash Shah in 2020 after earning a Master’s in Material Design at Central Saint Martins. Through his studies, he developed an alternative to traditional foam, based on 3D printed lattices. Beyond Foam places Shah’s research at the centre of one of the material’s biggest industries.
