Therminator 5: High Quality Hot End on Kickstarter

Software engineer, Tony May has developed a high quality , hot end, 3D printing extruder for a RepRap machine and launched it on Kickstarter.

Published:

Tony May, a software engineer from Chesterland Ohio, has often been frustrated with demanding 3D prints that fail due to poor quality hot ends/extruders, the better quality ones were just out of his price range so he did what any good RepRapper would do; made his own.

He’s so sure of the quality of his hot end, the Therminator 5, that he’s up on… guess… yes, Kickstarter. Asking for $2,000 dollars to manufacture 50 Therminator 5s May claims the major improvements are: The primary improvements of the design are:

  •  A larger heat zone for temp stabilization.
  •  Machined brass for better heat transfer  and durability.
  •  Double heat power resisters for fast heat -up and heat zone stability for fast print jobs.
  • A thicker insulator (PEEK) for heat isolation and durability.
  • Only has five total parts making it very easy to maintain
  •  The nozzle comes off without taking the extruder or hot end apart.
  • We are able to machine the PEEK insulator on our in house lathe.
  •  Uses nozzles that are always available and cost less than other nozzles you have to buy (if in stock)   The mount is common for most RepRap Mendel and Prusa extruders.
