Lunovu LMD system
Brandenburg University of Technology (BTU) has invested in and installed a Lunovu GmbH Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) machine.
The university based in Cottbus, Germany, has brought the metal additive manufacturing system in-house to enable the mechanical design and manufacturing department to work on the materials development, and production of lightweight components, among other things.
Lunovu’s LMD system boasts a 2kw diode laser, a 300 x 300 x 300 mm build volume, can process multiple materials in a single production sequence, and has been designed for industry and academia alike. The additive manufacturing machine’s installation will aid BTU Cottbus to in its work around manufacturing processes from design to end-use part. This research will explore integrated process chains and look into hybrid production processes which lean on both additive and subtractive technologies.
“A major target of our research activities is the local engineering of materials and parts,” commented Pro. Markus Bambach, who heads the mechanical design and manufacturing department. “Therefore, it was crucial to procure an LMD system which is reliable and easy to be operated. At the same time, we also looked for a flexible system that can be easily extended according to future research requirements. Even special features could be implemented by Lunovu, such as the integration of a laser cutting module. This will help us to develop local reinforcements on sheet metal blanks. And finally, we were quite impressed by the very professional and fast installation, including the final process start-up of the system.”
“We are very happy that BTU Cottbus has chosen a Lunovu LMD system,” added Dr. Rainer Beccard, Managing Director at Lunovu GmbH. “We are excited about the future research topics in which the machine is intended to play an important role.”
