Augment — print your marker
Print your marker — if you have a WiFi printer you can do this straight from the app.
There are a number of reasons that Augment is an awesome app. Firstly, it works. And believe me, I mean this. It works well, it didn't crash while I used it, it was easy to understand and easy to use. That is the first hurdle to clear when it comes to apping (IMHO).
Secondly, although augmented reality isn't new anymore, Augment takes it a step further by letting users upload their own 3D file to view first. So if you had a 3D printer you could throw your file to Augment and view your creation in situ before you have to fire up the printer. Time and money saved. Mega.
So how does it achieve such feats? I urge you to head to the app store of your favourite flavour (iOS or Android) and download it to see for yourself. You'll need some internet and a printer to complement your generic mobile computing platform.
I'm a bit of a Apple fan (mostly as working in publishing you tend to be on a Mac anyway, and once you have that you may as well complete the set) so I used a gen 2 iPad and my iPhone for the photos and video. I also moved my MacBook out of the way so I could see an Apple Classic sitting in its place.
Once downloaded, open the app and hit the 'Print the Marker' text. You'll be directed to a PDF to print. Easy, especially if you have a wireless printer.
Secondly, pick a 3D model or upload your own. I chose the Apple from the app's inbuilt library. Once you have pick your model, hit 'Augment' and let the app do its thing.
Place your now printed marker where you would like to see your model. Orientation isn't a problem as you can move, rescale and flip the model around X and Y once it's in view.
Point your phone/tablet at the marker and 'voila', your model will appear. You can walk around the model, look from above or below and as long as the marker is in shot the image will remain rooted to it's orientation so you can see all angles. Alternatively spin the marker and you spin the model.
