One of the great myths about 3D printing is that you can print anything. The misconception comes from how we think items are made; there was the famous example of Nokia releasing the CAD data for their Lumia cases in the early days of the desktop 3D printing boom.
The Finnish former leader of the mobile phone market thought that by tapping into a new trend it may revive the pulse they’d lost since iPhones and Android devices swarmed the market but what they, like many others, mistakenly thought that was you could just print the injection-moulded file and it would fit perfectly.
Obviously this was a little bit of a disaster and it took Materialise to come along and redesign the file so that it would work within 3D printing’s design rules before the customised smartphone cases snuggly fit.
