AMUG president's award
Tim Gornet of the University of Louisville has been presented with a prestigious prize from the Additive Manufacturing Users Group (AMUG).
At its 25th annual conference, the expert and past AMUG president was handed the coveted President's Award.
Mr Gornet, who manages the University's rapid prototyping centre operations at its JB Speed School of Engineering, is only the fifth individual to receive the accolade.
He received the award during the conference’s opening session before 365 attendees from 18 different countries. Three previous recipients of the award, eight past presidents and current president Gary Rabinovitz joined him on stage for the prizegiving.
Mr Rabinovitz said: "AMUG presented Tim this award in recognition of his exemplary vision, leadership and tireless years of service for the advancement of the users group."
The serving AMUG president added that his predecessor demonstrated perseverance, selflessness, passion, professionalism and friendship in his work.
Upon receiving the accolade, Mr Gornet said he was "humbled" and had not expected to take the prize home.
"I have been very lucky to be involved in additive manufacturing for such a long time. I truly enjoy all the technologies, the AMUG and especially all the people I have been able to meet over the years through additive manufacturing. I appreciate the honor and hope to continue to contribute back to the AM community," he added.
Gornet served as AMUG president from 2011 to 2012, which was a critical transition period when the group expanded to include all users from the additive manufacturing industry. Previously, the group served only those that possessed stereolithography (SLA) or laser sintering technologies. Gornet also served as chairman for the SLS users group prior to its merger with that for SLA.
Mr Rabinovitz remarked: "When called upon to step up to lead and assist, Tim did so without reservation, going beyond what was expected of him. Most importantly, the users group is deeply rooted in friendship, and Tim is, above all, a true friend to everyone he meets."
Past recipients of the President’s Award are Thomas A. Sorovetz (2000), Patti Brown (2006), Guy E. Bourdeau (2007) and Robert F. Zubrickie (2010).
