Last week I caught up with the team at CADScan, a startup business based in Chester in England's North West. The company currently has a Kickstarter project running for its CADScan3D scanner, a portable, easy-to-use, low cost 3D scanning solution for hobbyists and professionals.
I spoke to Alastair Buchanan, MD at Cadscan Ltd to find out what the project was hoping to achieve: "The main aim with this project is to bring to market a cost-effective and easy-to-use desktop 3D scanner. We have used self-funding, some Venture Capital investment and TSB funding to get the technology to this point and hope to use Kickstarter to get us over the line to commercialisaton."
Alastair is no newbie to the sector and has worked on image processing technology for most of his career, including development work for the modern 'lane departure warning systems' that are fitted to modern vehicles. He explained: "All the technology we have is proprietary and has been developed by us to overcome some of the challenges currently associated with desktop scanning solutions."
The white light system uses a phase-shitfting mechanism that the team developed to allow the scanner to be placed close to the objects it is scanning. This allows a compact product suitable for desktop use. With a scan size of around 250 mm3 and a resolution down to 0.2 mm, the system appears on paper to cover many of the bases. The company is looking for £80,000 of backing to make the project real (at the time of writing they have £43,000 with 28 days to go).
Final prices are likely to be more that £600 (what the Kickstarter project referes to as 'our lowest price') and £1000 which would get you a 'custom special' were you to pledge today.
