IDC appointments
L-R: Ben May and Julian SwanThe Industrial Design Consultancy (IDC) may only be four months into the year, but the development company has already celebrated two major appointments.
This month, the design and engineering consultancy announced it is welcoming new Engineering Director Julian Swan to its Berkshire headquarters in Berkshire.
Mr Swan is bringing with him more than two decades of design engineering experience, having previously honed his skills by heading up major commercial and technical projects through other consultancies.
The chartered engineer has a BEng in Aeronautical Engineering and an MSc in Computer-Aided Mechanical Engineering and in his 20 years in the industry has gained a proficiency in CAD and stress analysis of engineering structures, with expert knowledge of Finite Element Analysis and Computational Fluid Dynamics.
Commenting on his new appointment, Mr Swan stated: "This is a very exciting time of expansion and development for IDC and I am really pleased to have been given the opportunity to join the team.
"I am looking forward to strengthening the engineering capability and facilitating the development of IDC's service offering in other disciplines, such as user experience and usability, to further underpin IDC's rich heritage in delivering world class design to production."
In January, IDC Models - the rapid prototyping and model-making division of IDC - announced its new Director would be experienced industry expert Ben May.
Mr May joined the organisation after 25 years of working in the model making and prototyping business. Over this time he has worked in senior management at another of the UK's major product design consultancies and more recently he managed his own business and a prototyping consultant.
Mr May received his MSc in Engineering Business Management from Warwick University, where he concentrated on rapid prototyping and manufacturing research within the Advanced Manufacturing Group.
His appointment complements the IDC Model's vision for developing an intelligent prototyping approach that offers more value to customers than just the production of parts, models and prototypes.
Indeed, IDC offers a complete set of services in support of product development for engineers, inventors, OEMs and designers, providing for service and skills shortages that may not exist within their own capabilities in-house.
Such facilities include advising on best prototyping strategies to reduce development risk and secure funding, as well as assisting clients in planning for production through the early stages of their development programmes and ultimately manage or take over production on behalf of their customers.
Mr May commented: "I look forward to furthering the success of IDC Models and developing its reputation for production services. This is a natural progression as it already has some of the best facilities in the country with SLA for Rapid Prototyping, CNC machining, vacuum casting, laboratory condition testing facilities and dedicated space for production and assembly."
