AM Conference
It’s that time of year again! We’re taking an advanced look at the forthcoming 11th International Conference on Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing. In a warm up to the main event, UK Additive Manufacturing researchers from a number of UK Universities and Innovation Centres will descend on the Nottingham Belfry Hotel, taking to the main stage for the UK AM Research and Innovation day. There will be a specific focus on UK researchers who are at the forefront of AM & 3DP research to explain how their endeavours are paving the way for the wider implementation and commercialisation of AM technologies.
With the UK’s established position as a powerhouse of AM and 3DP research and innovation and with significant work underway in the development of the UK National Strategy for Additive Manufacturing/3D Printing, the day promises to be a fascinating insight into the far reaching research underpinning the growth and development of the UK’s AM capability.
The University of Nottingham’s Chris Tuck will be giving an overview of the broad research output from the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Additive Manufacturing. The talk will cover the latest developments in multimaterial and multifunctional AM; at Nottingham the research has focused on embedding functionality into structural systems, be it electrical, optical, biological or even pharmaceutical activity.
Oana Ghita from University of Exeter will be providing insight into her work on the expansion of high performance polymers for powder bed laser sintering and extrusion deposition processes with a focus on the polyaryletherketone family of polymers.
With a focus on biomedical applications, Francesca Tallia will be detailing the work conducted at Imperial College which focuses on the development of hybrid materials for bone and cartilage regeneration using extrusion printing.
The day will also benefit from a talk from Tim Minshall from the Institute for Manufacturing at the University of Cambridge. Tim will be discussing current strategy for addressing the technical, management and policy barriers to the adoption of AM in what will be a clearly insightful and engaging presentation.
The UK AM Research and Innovation day will include a number of other speakers from various prestigious research centres throughout the UK, including talks from: Innovate UK Lead Technologist for High Value Manufacturing, Robin Wilson; David Brackett, Technology Manager in Additive Manufacturing at The Manufacturing Technology Centre and Duncan Hand, Director of Research at Heriott-Watt University.
