LMI Technologies' Gocator Volume Checker
LMI Technologies, a developer of 3D scanning and inspection devices, has released the Gocator Volume Checker, an inspection solution for cylinder heads and piston bowls in small to medium-sized internal combustion engines (ICEs).
Enabling fast, accurate and reliable volume gauging, LMI believes its fully automated, non-contact 3D method can replace traditional methods of volume measuring, such as pressurised air and acoustics, and provide automotive players with more accurate measurements.
The Gocator Volume Checker combines the IP67-rated Gocator 3210 snapshot sensor, which boasts 35 µm, with custom measurement tools which are built in to the system. Using blue LED structured light, the Gocator Volume Checker take a single snapshot scan and delivers measurement results at + 0.04cm3 accuracy within just five seconds. A measurement can be received within such a short space of time even on combustion chambers and pistons with reflective surfaces. Using traditional methods, these scans can take up to five minutes to complete.
“Converting a manual process to a non-contact, automated solution using 3D technology enables engine block manufacturers to achieve higher accuracy and repeatability than ever before,” said Terry Arden, CEO, LMI Technologies. “We see many opportunities like this in various markets where critical tolerances are being verified with manual approaches but are better achieved with 3D inspection.
“The Gocator Volume Checker demonstrates the flexibility of our hardware and software platform, where we’re able to customise standard products with specific measurement tools to solve unique applications in many industries. The approach we offer is a powerful blend of 3D scanning technologies married to innovate 3D feature measurement algorithms for breakthrough solutions.”
