Working in conjunction with Thermacore Europe and the European Space Agency this PhD position seeks to develop systems for the cooling of spacecraft components. The project will utilise new additive manufacturing techniques (selective laser melting) developed at Liverpool to produce highly porous metallic components. Current SLM processing techniques and structures will be evolved to produce capillary activated heat pipes for the removal of heat from electronic components. The performance of these systems will be tested using the facilities at Themacore and analysed using fundamental thermodynamics. mechanical and fluidic properties of the structures produced will also be investigated.
You will work under the supervision of Dr Chris Sutcliffe at Liverpool and Dr Ryan McGlen at Themacore. The standard EPSRC Stipend and Fees at home/EU rate. This post will not support non EU nationals although applications may be considered from students who can cover the shortfall in fees.
The ideal applicant would hold a masters degree or equivalent in a relevant subject area typically engineering, physics or similar covering heat transfer, thermodynamics and mathematics. A practical background in the application of theory, numerical methods in thermal analysis, the design process and experimental research is required. Candidate’s qualifications should emphasise heat transfer, fluid flow and materials science/engineering.
