Additive manufacturing and its related technologies are being used by car manufacturers all over the world for their precision and ability to facilitate the creation of complex components.
At next month's TCT Show + Personalize on September 25th and 26th at the NEC in Birmingham, the automotive industry will be present to demonstrate just how the last year's developments have moved this exciting industry forward. Indeed, some of the additive manufacturing sector's biggest names have been working on exciting automotive projects or alongside consumer and F1 carmakers.
DSM has collaborated with original equipment manufacturers to develop materials that provide thermoplastic performance for racing cars. Alongside Somos Stereolithography Materials Group, DSM has teamed up with Toyota Motorsport to develop materials for the FIA World Endurance Championship in Le Mans, producing parts that are high-precision, high-modulus and temperature resistant - and could tip the balance taking the driver into first place on the track.
Marketing and Communications Manager for Toyota Motorsport Alastair Moffitt commented on the quality of Somos' service: "We were excited to have the Somos Materials Group join us at the Le Mans race to see what their products provide us. We have been extremely pleased with the results and quality they deliver."
Industry giant ExOne has made it clear the automotive and aerospace industries are key to the company's growth strategy, as it widens its materials portfolio with metals that are ideal for this kind of manufacturing and engineering. The organisation announced at the end of last month that it has added new iron, bronze and tungsten offerings to its range and developers are keen to release a new material every six months to better address the challenges faced by the automotive and aerospace industries, as well as heavy equipment manufacturers.
Ogle Models too has a strong foundation in automotive manufacturing, working with big names including Lamborghini, Bentley, Aston Martin, Jaguar Land Rover, Lotus and Bugatti, creating prototypes and building parts using CNC machining technology.
3D optical measurement specialist Physical Digital boasts more than a decade of experience in the automotive engineering sector, with its products being used for tool-making and modifications, prototyping, enhancements and reverse engineering. And the company offers a range of CAD packages facilitating automotive design.
Moreover, TCT Show + Personalize newcomer 3DPRINTUK may be exhibiting for the first time, but the London-based company already has some stellar automotive clients in its portfolio, including Aston Martin and Bugatti.
In truth, almost every industrial additive manufacturing company present at TCT Show + Personalize will have worked in some capacity in the automotive sector, which is why the industry can guarantee strong representation when the exhibition opens on September 25th. And in addition to the industry being represented on the show floor, the current list of registered companies due to attend the event includes juggernauts such as Jaguar Land Rover, Mitsubishi, Group Lotus, Williams F1, Marussia F1, Mclaren Racing and Rolls Royce, who doubtless will be checking out the competition and clocking the latest developments to take their own R&D up a gear.
