Windows 8.1 includes native support for 3D Systems' Cube 3D printer.The latest incarnation of Microsoft's ubiquitous operating systems Windows has been built to support 3D printing technology - perhaps indicating that 3D printers are going to become a more common sight in the home and in offices around the world.
Indeed, providing better support for this technology is one of the main features in the new Windows 8.1.
Vice-President of Microsoft Antoine Leblond announced the new feature during the company's Build 2013 conference keynote speech.
He said Windows 8.1 will facilitate 3D printing in such a way that it will be "just as easy and seamless as printing in 2D."
The Microsoft decision-maker also named two desktop 3D printers that will have native support via the upgraded platform, the Cube from 3D Systems and MakerBot's Replicator2.
"The response to Windows 8 has been substantial. Windows 8.1 will advance the bold vision set forward, but it will add new features and functionality that advance the touch experience and mobile computing's potential," Mr Leblond remarked.
"Windows 8.1 will deliver improvements and enhancements in key areas like personalisation, search, the built-in apps, Windows Store experience and cloud connectivity."
Microsoft said on its blog that the internationally-renowned technology business has "outlined design and economic opportunities for developers to build differentiated touch-based apps for the Windows platform".
