After establishing the Divergent Adaptive Production System (DAPS), Divergent secured the business of Bugatti, Lockheed Martin, General Atomics and more. Until this year, DAPS relied on metal additive manufacturing (AM) technology from Nikon SLM Solutions. But this summer, Divergent unveiled a proprietary AM system with 24 kW of laser power, a 700 x 700 x 835 mm build volume, and a robust gas flow system capable of up to 1700m3/hr. It is this system that the company plans to scale production with CEO Lukas Czinger speaks to Sam Davies.

TCT: Lukas, what motivated the Monolith One development?

LC: Performance, control, and scalability. On performance, we've been running AM machines to make production hardware, and in some sense co-developing them, for eight years, and we started to form some theses around how we wanted to increase performance. From laser power to laser count to gas flow to powder recycling to how we could change the laser beam profile; how could we bring that together to make a machine that is higher throughput while having higher uptime?
