Mark Bloomfield’s Daisy Hat
British designer Mark Bloomfield has been touring the world with his prize-winning 3D printed hat design.
Beating more than 20 other competitors in the Hats Off to 3D Printing design challenge at the Materialise World Conference in 2015, the “Daisy Hat” has been wowing audiences at fashion events and 3D printing expos across the globe.
Trained as a jeweller, Mark is primarily a maker of small pieces but has an active interest in wearable technology and biomimicry. As a big fan of 3D printing, Mark entered the competition with an innovative design that allowed the technology to truly flourish.
Bending the rules, the designer who has worked with the likes of Vivienne Westwood and Paul Smith, set about creating a design that would fit into the 20 x 20 x 20 cm design specifications but could transform into something much bigger with articulated pieces.

Designed with upright petals, the daisy formation comes to life when a model walks down the runway allowing the petals to naturally move in motion and result in a new shape for each wear. When fully open the design can reach a diameter of 60 cm.
Since winning the competition Mark has gone on to present his design at fashion and maker events including the NTU fashion event in Singapore, the Melinda Looi’s fashion event in Malaysia, RAPID in the US, Maker Faire in Tokyo and of course the Materialise World Conference in Belgium.
3D printing experts are gearing up for the 2105 Materialise World Conference in Belgium which hits the Square in Brussels on the 23-24 April. FashionTech designer, Anouk Wipprecht, will be demonstrating how 3D printing and fashion has evolved by leading the fashion-tech presentation with her revolutionary take on the combination of fashion and engineering.
