Sense 3D Scanner
3D Systems have announced their biggest hardware development since they launched the Cube at International CES in 2012, Sense. The Sense is a handheld 3D scanner able to scan anything from a cupcake to a full human being in full colour.
The handheld scanner is able to deliver precise models (up to 400,000 triangles) instantaneously. Once you’ve pointed your scanner at your subject the bundled software, which is proprietary Geomagic based software, is able to export a watertight, 3D printable STL file. The scan also exports PLY colour data files so as the user can order their model from 3D printing services in full colour and a range of materials.
3D Systems’ CEO Avi Reichental will launch Sense live on-stage at Engadget Expand on November 8th and General Manager of Consumer Products as 3D Systems, Rajeev Kulkarni said; “The Sense is the first ever 3D content camera for everyone, making it possible to capture people, objects and places on the go. I anticipate that the Sense’s intuitive nature, portability, range, unmatched quality and powerful user interface and user experience will spur a new social movement around 3D sharable and printable physical photography.”
Astonishingly the price of the 3D Systems Sense is just $399 (£279) and available immediately on Cubify and at hundreds of Staples stores in the US, that’s a full $1000 less than another much publicised 3D scanner launched recently.
