Hands Free Whopper
A cheeky little advert depicting sportsmen, musicians, dog walkers, tattoo artists, masseuses and just about anybody who uses their hands to do what they do, eating a Burger King Whopper hands free using a 3D printed holster, has taken the internet by storm.
The company that printed the product on a Stratasys FDM machine, Incept3D, have uploaded the video of the holder being printed with an accompanying note beneath that they had no idea what they were actually printing for the client. After being inundated with requests that have said they will look into releasing the schematics.
The secrecy the 3D printed item is shrouded in seems quite odd for such a clear throw-away joke. What seems clear is that this is just a viral video, perhaps created by Ogilvy’s Puerto Rican arm as a celebration of the Whopper’s 50-year reign in the Central American unincorporated territory. What is unclear is whether or not this is an officially endorsed and manufactured product or not.
BK said this to CNBC "The video featuring a 'hands-free' Whopper Sandwich holder was produced by an agency in Puerto Rico to celebrate the brand and the iconic Whopper Sandwich in a humorous way. However, the product depicted in the spot was not produced, or distributed to guests as some reports indicate,"
However there’s a couple of versions floating about including one here on Creativity Online which clearly states that the company are giving the Hands Free Whopper away to the top 50 customers in their CRM database, a campaign set to continue all year.
Since the original advert has gone viral the website it is pointed to has been taken down, yet the whois.net profile of handsfreewhopper.com says it is owned by Burger King Puerto Rico.
Was this just one big joke? Or have the Burger King Puerto Rico arm raced ahead with an idea before checking with the powers that be? Perhaps not expecting these levels of publicity? Whatever it is there’s no way you could finish the second half of the Whopper…
