Delcam to demo ArtCAM JewelSmith with Autodesk Ember 3D printer

Autodesk’s open source, triple-hitting (that's hardware, software, materials) Spark 3D printing platform certainly caught the attention of the entire 3D printing industry when it sneaked onto the scene last year. With a host of renowned names like Local Motors, HP and 3D Hubs already signed up as partners, Spark is really beginning to shine. Now Delcam is on a mission to showcase what Spark’s very own Ember 3D printer can do for the jewellery sector.

Delcam, the leading supplier of advanced CADCAM solutions for the manufacturing industry, will demonstrate the new Ember 3D printer from Autodesk and a development version of ArtCAM JewelSmith with support for 3D printing at the Jewellery & Watch Fair to be held at the NEC, Birmingham, as part of the Spring Fair from 1st to 5th February.

Designed as a reference device for its open Spark 3D printing platform, Ember uses digital-light stereolithography to cure liquid resins, particularly useful for for the casting of jewellery. Offering a rapid build speed, the printer has the ability to produce up to ten model rings in an hour or up to twenty model rings in less than 90 minutes.

ArtCAM JewelSmith has been developed for artisans rather than engineers to allow jewellery manufacturers to increase productivity, improve quality and deliver new designs more quickly, by combining traditional craft skills with the power and precision of digital manufacturing. The software includes a gem library, which can be added to by the user, and the KeyShot rendering system, which creates extremely accurate and lifelike images for either customers or retailers to view, or for the production of catalogues and other marketing materials.

The 2015 release of ArtCAM JewelSmith makes it much easier to create complex designs, with a new ‘putty’ tool.  This allows models to be edited by picking an area to be moved, swirled, pinched or puckered, specially valuable when creating a series of variants on a repeating element in a design or subtly changing fine details within a single model. 

Currently under development at Delcam, future releases of ArtCAM JewelSmith will support 3D printing with Ember and other 3D printers.
