Last month saw HBO issue a cease and desist order to nuPROTO for their Throne Dock, HBO said this was a clear IP infringement from their television series Game of Thrones. The startup bowed to the greater power of HBO’s lawyers and has removed the item from sale. This sparked a whole debate on copyright and 3D printing, how can copyright be upheld when people are manufacturing in the home? Startup Fabulonia say they have got the answer.
The Finnish-Estonian firm run by former Nokia employee Kimmo Isbjörnssund will present their new approach to digital rights management at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in four days time.
“FABULONIA's solution covers all the necessary steps from the upload of 3D designs and storage to distribution, using new patent-pending technologies, such as the Collaborative Copyright Technology and Secure 3D Streaming. It is not based on old Digital Rights Management schemes and FABULONIA calls it a consumer and ecosystem friendly approach to copyrights.”
If FABULONIA’s marketplace does solve the copyright issue then we’re sure they’re going to be one to watch, we look forward to seeing it in flow.
