Leading futurologist calls 3D printing a "true revolution"
One of the keys to any business sustaining success is being able to spot future trends and how they may affect profit. This is beginners level business studies, the SWAT analysis just about every business did on day one will tell you what your threats are. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on which way you look at it, some established businesses don’t spot these trends and end up losing huge amounts of money or even going bust.
Daniel Burrus is considered as one of the world’s leading futurologists, he uses the example of Polaroid and digital photography to show this lack of foresight. Burrus says he has never been wrong in spotting a trend for 28 years, he’s hired by conglomerates like Kellogs, Yahoo, Mastercard, Disney… in fact it may be easier to name the world’s largest companies he hasn’t worked for. Author of six books, including the bestselling Flash Foresight, Burrus is certainly a man to pay close attention to.
So, when Burrus names something as a “true revolution” the business world tends to listen. Today that something is 3D printing. Yes our favourite topic is the latest subject of Burrus video blog “Know what’s next”.
In the video, Burrus talks about the advancements in 3D printing from rapid prototyping to finished products and the orthopedic applications. He also says that he sees a company like Amazon taking over the 3D printing marketplace (as I suggested in my blog yesterday) plus companies licensing products to be 3D printed on the other side of the world to do away with shipping costs. Burrus concludes by suggesting 3D printing could become very disruptive to current manufacturing businesses.
