Disney
Stormtroopers
We’re JJ Abrams crazy on Personalize, not content with banging on about a company named after the evil conglomerate on his TV Show Fringe and the fact that 3D Systems launched their Star Trek figurine service in time for his latest Trek movie, we’ve got another Abrams’ franchise 3D Printing tie-in.
Abrams was announced, to much aghast, as the man taking the helm of the re-launch of the Star Wars universe after Disney purchased the company from George Lucas.
If there’s one thing The House of Mouse knows how to do well it is movie merchandise, and they’re tagging on to the 3D printing hype by using the technology to either a.) carbon-freeze fans a la Han Solo in the Empire Strikes Back finale, or b.) Turn fans into elite soldiers of the Galactic Empire, Stormtroopers.
Fans attending Star Wars Weekends at Disney’s Hollywood Studio this year will be able to stroll into Darth’s Mall and get themselves scanned using “the world’s highest, single-shot 3D scanner” which will then be 3D printed and sent to your home.
Not to get all partisan here but I much prefer Star Wars to Star Trek and therefore got a lot more excited about these figurines than perhaps I should. However I hope Disney offer the service in a similar manner to 3D Systems so as I don’t have to fly all the way to Hollywood just to get myself turned into a Stormtrooper figurine!
