3D Printed Ornament Design Challenge
The White House is getting into the festive spirit with a 3D printing twist. For the first time ever, President Obama and the First Lady are inviting makers and innovators across the U.S. to participate in the White House 3D-Printed Ornament Challenge.
In partnership with the Smithsonian and Instructables, designers and 3D print enthusiasts are being given the opportunity to deck the halls of the White House by designing a winter holiday-inspired ornament to be displayed during the holiday season for thousands of visitors to see.
The theme of the ornament should represent the magic of the festive period, measure no larger than 3” x 3” and include the .stl file.
Entrants do not need to have a 3D printer, simply design the ornament using any 3D modelling software and the winning designs will be printed and shipped to the White House.
Winners will also feature on the Smithsonian’s 3D data platform and will join a small collection of White House ornaments in the political history division of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.
Since the White House Maker Faire in June, the White House has continued to support opportunities for students to learn about STEM through making and expand the resources available for maker entrepreneurs.
The Challenge encourages schools and communities to host ornament design workshops or activities and then submit designs via Instructables.
The competition runs until November 10, 2014 - just 10 days to get making.
