World's first 3D printed snowboard
With a new technology such as 3D printing you’re going to have to put up with a lot of “world’s first” type hyperbole. Pretty much every product you can be think of will eventually have a “World’s first 3D printed” tagged onto the front of it, it won’t be long until we see “The World’s first 3D printed drainpipe”.
Nevertheless, this is product is much cooler than any fixture and fitting, the “world’s first” 3D printed snowboard; printed by California’s GROWit and co-designed by Signal Snowboards for their Every Third Thursday YouTube show.
The product is printed in parts and put together like a jigsaw, from there it is treated with resin and reinforced with iron rods. Signal Snowboards’ founder Dave Lee goes along to see the SLS process in full flow and then takes great joy in testing it out on the slopes of Colorado.
The SLS process allowed the guys at signal to try some shapes they’d not be able to achieve through traditional manufacturing process, such as a wider shovel nose which “feels great when you’re making turns”. So that’s the adrenaline junkies’ doors firmly opened to 3D printing. Check the video out for yourself...
