Formlabs dental software and resins
Releasing two new dental 3D printing materials and upcoming biocompatible materials for 3D printed dentures, Formlabs is also introducing software integration solutions in conjunction with 3Shape.
Formlabs, the American 3D printing manufacturer, has today made two announcements to advance its foray into the dental sector.
Releasing two new dental 3D printing materials and upcoming biocompatible materials for 3D printed dentures, Formlabs is also introducing software integration solutions in conjunction with 3Shape.
The new materials are Dental Model, a high accuracy resin for crown and bridge models with removable dies, and Dental LT Clear, a long-term biocompatible resin for direct-printing orthodontic appliances such as splints and retainers. The biocompatible materials for 3D printed dentures are both class IIa. Formlabs will showcase the dental resins for the first time next week at IDS 2017, presenting workshops and demos of their new dental applications.
Since Formlabs introduced Dental SG, the first biocompatible resin for desktop 3D printers, last April, the company has experienced significant growth in the dental market.

Since Formlabs introduced Dental SG, the first biocompatible resin for desktop 3D printers, last April, the company has experienced significant growth in the dental market.
“To date, Formlabs dental users have completed over 150,000 prints, and Form 2 printed guides have been used in more than 10,000 implant surgeries,” said Gideon Balloch, Dental Product Lead at Formlabs. “With today’s new dental materials, applications, and software integrations, the Form 2 has really become a powerful digital dentistry tool for business of any size. To push the forefront of dental 3D printing, to the point where even chairside 3D printing is cost-effective, is truly amazing.”
Max Lobovsky, co-founder and CEO of Formlabs, added: “In building the biggest professional desktop 3D printing company, we constantly look to break into promising new markets. Sales in dental 3D printing have been one of our fastest growing areas, and Formlabs products are increasingly the go-to 3D printing technologies for dental professionals.”
Partnering with 3Shape, a global leader in 3D scanning and CAD/CAM software for dental practice, Formlabs is also delivering software integration solutions to bring seamless dental 3D printing workflows to the worldwide market.
Representing Formlabs’ first integration solution, the workflow will streamline guide design for dental practitioners, making it easier and more affordable to produce surgical guides.

Formlabs' new materials are Dental Model, a high accuracy resin for crown and bridge models with removable dies, and Dental LT Clear, a long-term biocompatible resin for direct-printing orthodontic appliances such as splints and retainers.
“The integration between the Form 2 and industry leading products from 3Shape enables dental CAD/CAM workflows so streamlined that even chairside 3D printing becomes possible,” said Balloch. “3Shape and Formlabs share a commitment in pioneering powerful, seamless and accessible technologies. We’re excited to continue pushing new boundaries in digital dentistry together.”
With the Formlabs-3Shape integration solution, dental practitioners can create guides ready for surgery by scanning with 3Shape TRIOS intraoral scanners and designing with 3Shape Implant Studio software, before hitting ‘print’ with Formlabs’ PreForm software. Within just a matter of hours, a surgical guide can be 3D printed with Formlabs’ biocompatible Dental SG resin, or perhaps a bridge model with Formlabs’ new Dental Model resin.
“The streamlined workflow between 3Shape TRIOS Implant Studio and Formlabs printers is a tremendous benefit for doctors,” adds Birk Ploennigs, 3Shape, Product Director Implantology. “We now have surgeons designing and printing their own surgical guides in hours using integrated 3D printers like Formlabs’ instead of waiting weeks, and at a fraction of the cost. Because of the huge time and cost savings, doctors are now using guides on every surgery when clinically applicable. This has translated into faster and more predictable treatments for their patients.”
Demos of the Formlabs-3Shape integrated workflow will be given at IDS, Koelnmesse, Germany March 21st – 26th. Formlabs will be presenting at Hall 3.1, stand L70, while 3Shape will be presenting at Hall 4.2, stands L090, N091 and N090.
