GE Additive has opened a 15,000-square-metre Arcam electron beam melting (EBM) centre of excellence in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The new facility triples the floor space of Arcam’s previous site in Mölndal and has the capacity to house up to 500 employees.
This development has come about as a direct response to an increasing demand for EBM technology, per GE Additive. The location will harness lean manufacturing principles and act as a centre for production, research and development, training and service support.
“The Arcam EBM team in Gothenburg is energised to be in its new home – a dynamic, sustainable workplace – in a great location,” commented Karl Lindblom, General Manager, GE Additive Arcam EBM. “We will harness that energy and continue to research, innovate and drive EBM technology further. Throughout, we have benefitted immensely from GE’s experience and know-how in applying lean manufacturing. Customers joining our annual user group meeting next month will be the first to see our Center of Excellence – which we hope will become a focal point for the entire additive industry.”
Arcam’s EBM technology is applied across a range of vertical markets including medical and aerospace and has also been a key part of GE Additive’s efforts in the education of young engineers. The Swedish firm was acquired by GE Additive towards the end of 2016 and has since seen the opening of an AP&C additive manufacturing facility in Quebec, Canada and the unveiling of the EBM Spectra H machine. As the investment continues, metal additive manufacturing applications grow, and with R&D being outlined as a key focus of the new Arcam facility, further enhancements to the product portfolio are likely.
