Luxexcel, the optics company 3D printing ophthalmic lenses, has received an equity investment totalling €4m from Innovation Industries, Dutch venture capital fund.
It follows a €8.5m investment from a group of strategic investors for its core ophthalmic activities in May 2017.
With this most recent round of financial backing, Luxexcel will look to accelerate the development of its 3D printing platform for prescription lenses, linking it up with other emerging technologies. The platform-functionality will experience significant expansion as Luxexcel targets co-development programs and partnerships related to Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality. Meanwhile, Luxexcel expects to install some industrial grade 3D printing systems before the end of the year in the US and Europe.
The contemporary technologies meet to provide the Luxexcel Vision platform, able to be fully integrated into ophthalmic lab flows, and open up a new industry lens segment for users. It also offers opportunities for the manufacturers of AR/VR headsets, who now have the opportunity to commercialise their products with personalised prescription lenses included.
All in, the Luxexcel platform consists of industrial grade optical 3D printing systems, lens-design software, ophthalmic quality print materials and workflow integration tools. Together, Luxexcel is confident they enable users to manufacture 3D printed industry-standard ophthalmic-quality lenses.
“AR/VR applications have become a hot topic in the industry,” said Hans Streng, Chief Executive Officer of Luxexcel. “We add the ability to 3D print ophthalmic-quality prescription lenses to these applications. This enables the AR/VR headset manufacturers to offer fully personalised smart eyewear in an attractive frame design. The ability to our platform to 3D print ophthalmic lenses in any shape or form and the possibility to embed ne functionalities in the lends triggers entirely new dimensions in terms of user-experience and business opportunity.”
Nard Sintenie, Founding Partner at Innovation Industries BV added: “We believe that with the technology of Luxexcel it will be possible to combine AR/VR applications with RX eye correction, which is an essential component in bringing smart eye wear to the mainstream market. We are excited about leveraging the high-tech network in the Netherlands to enable this unique breakthrough.”
