A new smartphone attachment is set to make 3D photography an affordable reality.
Matter and Form, the New York startup that brought the affordable Matter and Form 3D Scanner to the market in 2014, has launched Bevel on Kickstarter, a simple smartphone attachment that turns your phone into a 3D camera.
The world first is unlike any other 3D photography attachment which traditionally only create the illusion of 3D by enhancing the depth of an image. Bevel is different and uses an eye safe laser light with the existing device camera to enable Genuine 3D photography to capture images that can actually be used for applications such as 3D printing.

Measuring just 2.5 inches, the compact device can be plugged straight into the headphone jack of any smartphone or tablet and with the free Bevel app, users can share their images on social media or even use them for more advanced applications like animation, video game design and 3D printing.
The campaign page explains: “When it comes to communicating visually, photos are great and video is even better. But the problem is we don’t live in a flat, two-dimensional world. It’s not our native dimension. When we communicate with ordinary photographs, we’re never really telling the whole story because the fact is, a photograph just isn’t the whole picture. But together, we can change that.”
With just over two weeks to go, Bevel has already smashed its Kickstarter target of $200,000 with almost 3,000 backers pledging to get their hands on the attachment for as little as $39. The standard price is just $49 and Bevel is available in black, white and Limited Edition Brushed Aluminium.
