Microlay Dental Fab 3D printer
Microlay's DentalFab 3D printer
Spanish 3D technology manufacturers, Microlay, have launched the DentalFab 3D printer designed specifically for the dental market after two years of research and development.
The new system is said to improve, not only the optimisation of workflow for the dentist, but also enhances patient experience.
Its speed, accuracy, resolution and compact form makes it ideal for dental laboratories, big and small.
Using a unique software, the DentalFab is designed to simplify the process of 3D printing. It also allows the user to control the operation of the machine within minutes of the first use.
The printing system can be used to produce a number of parts, including temporary crowns and bridges. Performing an intraoral scan, Microlay promises when the DentalFab is at work it ensures the patient can feel more comfortable during a less invasive experience. Once the scan is complete, the captured digital file can be exported and then printed. The printer is USB compatible and has the ability to connect to PCs and Macs via WiFi.
Within a few hours, surgical guides can be obtained, as well as models and castable prosthetics, among other things, simplifying and speeding up a dentist’s workflow. Biocompatible pieces can also be printed right at the user’s desk.
The DentalFab has an anodised aluminium finish, creating a slick, professional look. It was chosen by Microlay for the printing surface and bucket to minimise the natural wear of the parts in contact with the resin, enabling considerable savings on replacements.
It also includes a 7” touchscreen with a clean, intuitive and easy-to-use interface, making the handling of routine procedures easier. All the operator has to do once the scan is complete is load the digital file, select a profile to match the resin and then press ‘print’. Another useful feature accessible via the touchscreen is a monitoring camera fitted below the bucket so the user can keep a constant check on what is going on during the process.
Once the parts have been printed, they require post-processing before use. DentalFab has an integrated post-processing chamber, equipped with two 18W UV-365nm +405nm LED lamps, simplifying the process and dispelling the need to purchase another device.
The printer’s SmartLift technology and untethered printing not only mean the device does not need to be connected to a PC, since it already has one integrated, but also optimises printing time – reducing it by around 400%.
