Nokian SnapSkan 2
As the vehicle goes over the speed-bump-like scanner, lasers will automatically put its focus into the tyre treads, measuring their depth.
Finish tyre manufacturer, Nokian has developed a 3D scanning service which evaluates the condition of tyre tread.
SnapSkan is a quicker and more efficient way to assess tyres while they are in motion. Nokian want the service to appear along everyday routes, such as car parks, world-wide in the very near future, meaning drivers would not need to go out of their way to check their tyres.
As the vehicle goes over the speed-bump-like scanner, lasers will automatically put its focus into the tyre treads, measuring their depth.
A camera will identify the vehicle based on its registration number. When the scan is complete, the driver can opt to receive a personal tyre report by text message or email, free of charge, regardless of which manufacturer’s tyres are fitted to the car. The report will not only give the results of the scan, but also offer a quote for new tyres from a partnering dealership, if required.
The first scanning point will be implemented at an underground car park in Helsinki, with other points to be set up throughout Finland in the near future. These will include all Vianor tyre outlets. Within the next few years, Nokian will be looking to take the technology to a range of other countries.
Nokian have gone about finding a solution for monitoring tyre treads because of their role in the safety of road users.
Tyre treads are designed to have good grip on wet and slippery surfaces. The longer a vehicle is being used on a road, the more likely it is to see its tyre tread thin and thus become less effective. When tyre tread becomes more worn it has a negative impact on the vehicle’s breaking performance, potentially leading to more road traffic accidents.
The law requires car tyres to have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm in a continuous band around the central three quarters of the tyre. Nokian’s new scanning service will allow for road users to easily check their tyre tread, and maintain the safety of their vehicle.
