LENS 860 Hybrid Controlled Atmosphere (CA) System
Optomec has launched the LENS 860 Hybrid Controlled Atmosphere (CA) System ahead of the upcoming IMTS show in Chicago.
The machine is the latest addition to the company’s LENS Machine Tool Series, in which all products incorporate Optomec’s LENS 3D metal printing technology. It boasts a 860 x 600 x 610 mm build volume, which is hermetically-sealed to maintain oxygen and moisture levels below 10 ppm for processing reactive metals, like titanium, and has a 3KW fibre laser enabling large parts with excellent metal quality.
Key to the LENS 860 Hybrid CA’s proficiencies is its ability to use its milling capacity to perform finish machining on a printed part without the need for re-fixturing or aligning the components on a second machine. Per Optomec, the machine can produce and repair larger parts cost-effectively, but also print fine-features for thin wall structures and wide area cladding for wear coating applications. Harnessing additive and subtractive operations in a single tool path and with a pretty sizeable build volume, Optomec believes the new suite of machines match the manufacturing efficiencies of traditional methods.
“The new LENS 860 suite of systems builds on the success of our Machine Tool Series, first launched at IMTS in 2016,” commented Dave Ramahi, Optomec President and CEO. “These new larger machines continue to demonstrate our ability to transition Optomec production-proven 3D metal printing capability onto traditional CNC platform that match the cost, performance and ease-of-use demands of the traditional CNC platforms that match the cost, performance and ease-of-use demands of the traditional machine tool market. These products are a key element of our strategy to bring metal additive manufacturing into the industrial mainstream.”
Also being made available are three alternative configurations, the Hybrid Open Atmosphere System; Additive Open Atmosphere System; and the Additive Controlled Atmosphere System.
