Renishaw Gloucestershire's STEM Company Award
Industrial additive manufacturing champion and global engineering giant Renishaw has been named Gloucestershire's STEM Company of the Year.
The accolade recognises the West England-headquartered organisation's work to inspire young people about the STEM subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The prize was awarded to Renishaw on October 17th at a special STEM Ambassador's Reception at Gloucester City Museum and Art Gallery.
Renishaw was recognised for its extensive work with 15 local secondary schools where the company sponsors STEM award programmes. In addition, Renishaw was congratulated for the support it gives a mobile laboratory which takes science resources to primary schools, plus its initiative to train 28 young Renishaw employees to become STEM Ambassadors that will work with and inspire young students.
Renishaw's work is a positive move that could help boost the number of high-caliber young engineers coming out of British schools and colleges and the company is committed to supporting the future of this key growth sector. Moreover, it has well-established apprenticeship programmes, as well as sponsored student and industrial placement schemes backing up its resolve to boost engineering in the UK. In 2013 Renishaw has recruited a record 40 apprenticeships and 54 graduates and now has 110 apprentices in training.
Julie Collins, Renishaw's Education Liaison Executive, commented: "Being named Gloucestershire STEM Company of the Year is wonderful recognition of the hard work of our STEM Ambassadors, the strong relationships that we have developed with local schools, and the many projects that we sponsor across the region.
"Helping children to enjoy STEM subjects at school is the best way to encourage them to study engineering at universities or to consider an engineering apprenticeship. The work of company and individual STEM Ambassadors, is therefore vital to the future of the UK engineering sector."
