Sculpteo, the online 3D printing service has released a free eBook to highlight the cost effectiveness of using 3D printing for manufacturing.
A Sculpteo Guide to Cost and Efficiency Through Short Series Manufacturing, shows how additive manufacturing can help product developers realise their ideas more effectively when compared to traditional manufacturing processes such as injection moulding.
The study notes advancements in pricing and online technologies such as its own Sculpteo Batch Control tool, as key factors in driving the technology as a key player on the production line.
“Ordering multiple objects directly on our website turns 3D printing into a real manufacturing solution,” commented Clément Moreau, Sculpteo’s CEO. “By making it cost-effective for people to order higher volumes, Sculpteo is taking 3D printing beyond prototypes and on-demand manufacturing and into mass-production.”
A comparison between the prices of objects printed with SLS and injection moulding features in the book along with an examination of the material properties of parts produced with SLS. The study looks at the number of units produced, volume of the object and the complexity of design.
Sculpteo claims the research confirms 3D printing’s economic benefits and its positive status as a viable option for manufacturing complex objects. Though it does state that 3D printing does not offer a complete replacement for injection moulding. The result is a study that provides designers and businesses of all sizes with the correct knowledge about the manufacturing options available to them in order to successfully design and produce their products.
