Desktop 3D printing brand, Ultimaker has brought to market a new support material, Ultimaker Breakaway, and a 0.25mm print core with immediate availability.
The new products have been introduced in response to customer demand and are compatible with the Ultimaker 3 and 3 Extended platforms.
Ultimaker Breakaway is a support material for multi-extrusion 3D printing, which can be quickly removed and doesn’t require post processing. It is optimised for Ultimaker ABS, PLA, Nylon, CPE and CPE+ materials and has been developed to provide a ‘hassle-free 3D printing experience.’
Once the part has been printed, the support can be broken off without sanding or waiting for the material to dissolve. While ensuring a smooth surface finish, it is also less sensitive to moisture compared to water-soluble supports like PVA.
The 0.25mm print core, meanwhile, will enable users of Ultimaker machines to produce parts with detail and thin walls, standing as an alternative option to the 0.40mm and 0.80mm print cores already available. Offered in type AA, the print core can help to produce fine aesthetic and tolerance fit parts, like bolts and nuts, as well as be applied in dental model casting, microfluidics, and jewellery and architectural models, where fine detail is essential.

Ultimaker’s new print core supports Ultimaker PLA, ABS, CPE, Nylon and PP materials, and is compatible with dual colour, as well as PVA support when combined with a 0.4mm BB print core. The company, which has been in operation in 2011, believes the new product offerings enable users of the Ultimaker 3 and 3 Extended to enjoy a more flexible and productive solution.
“Before we start developing something new at Ultimaker, whether this is hardware, software, material, or new services, we make sure there is a true desire for it,” said Paul Heiden, Senior Vice President Product Management. “We learn everyday by analysing the way our products are used and the questions we receive through our online platforms. So, even though our PVA material is still a great solution for prints with intricate geometries and internal cavities that need support, we found that our users were also in need of a support material that takes less time to remove. With Ultimaker Breakaway they can seriously speed up post processing and use their newly printed objects right away. We also followed up on the desire for highly detailed prints by developing a print core with a smaller nozzle size.”
