New improved interface makes Cura more intuitive than ever.
Ultimaker has launched a new version of its free Cura 3D printing software complete with a host of new features. Rebuilt from the ground up, the latest version has been designed to allow seamless integration between hardware, software and materials.
Users can now extend Cura’s capabilities with a new plugin-based system within the Uraniam framework, allowing new features to be added as they become available. The interface has also been completely redesigned to make it more intuitive and much sharper for high-DPI screens.
A “Time-Quality Slider” has been introduced to replace the three default printing profiles, which gives users more control over the balance between print time and quality. Following huge demand from the 3D printing community, a new undo/redo button has also been added.

New Cura allows seamless integration between hardware, software and materials.
The Advanced mode is now configurable and includes several new settings and gives users the opportunity to create their own. The new CuraEngine features improved support generation algorithms and more options for support structure generation to improved positioning and degradability.
An experimental new feature has also been added in the form of Wire Printing. This interesting addition means objects can be printed as a structure of lines in advanced mode.
Some features from Cura’s previous incarnation have been removed including the Configuration Wizard and Bed Leveling Wizard but Ultimaker are working on introducing as many of these original features as soon as possible. With this in mind, Ultimaker has highlighted some key updates that users can expect to see come to Cura first. Along with the Configuration Wizard and Bed Leveling Wizard, the All At Once/One At A Time Printing feature will also be included. A dual extrusion feature with a completely new workflow and an improved way to incorporate Lay Flat and Split Objects Into Parts will be implemented along with X-Ray View as a future plug in.
Cura is available to download now.
