MakerBot Factory
The Obama Administration is very keen to stress the potential 3D printing represents for the job market, as a result the US is investing heavily in the industry. There are plenty of sceptics but they only need to take a look at what MakerBot is doing in the most populous city in the US.
A company, founded just four years previously is now expanding its manufacturing base in the heart of New York City and looks set to increase its workforce by 50%.
The new factory cum warehouse, which will be opened on Friday, June 7, is a 50,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility required to meet the growing demand MakerBot now face for their machines.
Located in the heart of Brooklyn, CEO Bre Pettis will be present at the ribbon cutting ceremony to show guests around the new factory. 50,000 square foot doesn’t come cheap in the heart of Brooklyn, a surefire signifier that the desktop 3D printing firm are almost certainly on the up.
The company has also updated the world on the progress of its 3D scanner "Digitizer", showcasing a project by MakerBot’s Chief Strategy Officer Jenny Lawton, who has set about 'digitizing' creations from her childhood.
UPDATE: MakerBot opened the factory to much acclaim. Bre Pettis was joined at the official ribbon cutting ceremony by New York's Chief Digital Officer Rachel Hoat who said of the facility, "MakerBot is shaping the future of manufacturing and the decision to expand in Brooklyn illustrates that New York City is the world's centre of creativity and innovation. Now thanks to companies like MakerBot, New York City is fast emerging as the capital of 3D printing as well."
